The bar chart shows the urban and rural population in China in three different periods. To be specific, the urban population has experienced a steady increase, from 300 million to about 670 million, while rural dwellers have dropped from 820 million to around 680 million, almost the same level of city dwellers.

The causes of this trend are well known. First, China has undergone an unprecedented urbanization during the past twenty years with millions of new work positions created every year. Another fact is that Chinese villagers, traditionally expected to farm, are now more inclined to seek the same diverse career paths as other citizens.

Since urbanization in China can be expected to continue, we have every reason to believe that the city population will further grow while the rural population will keep shrinking. Not only will the urban population grow, but cities will become overpopulated and filled with traffic congestion. The government should not ignore these problems while enioying the fruits of urbanization.
