用于一段具體時間之后，表示從過去或將來算起的多長時間以后，但通常不指從現在算起的多久以后。如：
誤：I’ll call again a week later.（可改為…in a week）
正：I called again a week later. 一周后我又打了電話。
正：I’ll call her on March 5 and will call again a week later. 我將在3月5日給她打個電話，過一周后我將再打個電話。
但是later單獨使用（即不連用具體時間），可以表示從現在算起的“以后”（具有泛指意義）。如：
Let’s stop now and finish it later. 現在停下來，以后再完成它。
He may be busy, in which case I’ll call later. 他可能忙，如若如此，我以后再來拜訪。

用于 later on，表示“以后”“后來”，可用于過去或將來。如：
We’ll discuss the matter later on. 我們以后將討論這件事。
Later on he realized his mistake. 后來他認識到了自己的錯誤。

sooner or later 為習語，意為“遲早”，注意其詞序不能倒過來。如：
You’ll know the truth sooner or later. 你遲早會知道真相的。
Sooner or later you’ll have to make a decision. 你早晚得拿個主意。
