Signatures are an important part of the design of a ship. In an ideal situation, signatures must be as low as possible. However, due to budget constraints it is most unlikely to reach this ideal situation. The arising question is which levels of signatures are optimal given the different scenarios in which a ship operates and the incurred cost to obtain these signature levels. This leads to three questions: 'which signature is most important in a given scenario?', 'what signature level is needed to operate as good as possible?' and 'how can the signatures be reduced in a cost-effective way?' The design of the ship depends on the answers to these questions. TNO Defence Security and Safety has developed methods that support the decision-maker and ship designer in answering these questions
