指示代詞指用來指示或標記人或事物的代詞。

一、常見的指示代詞

常見的指示代詞有：this（這個）、these（這些）、that（那個）和those（那些）。其中，this和that表單數(shù)，these和those表復數(shù)。此外，such、same和so也可以起指示代詞的作用。

二、指示代詞的用法

1.普通指示代詞的用法

①this/these指代時間或空間上較近的人或物，that/those指代時間或空間上較遠的人或物。例如：

• This was the moment when I made my decision. 這就是我做出決定的時刻。(時間上近指)

• These are the people that make me write it. 這些就是激發(fā)了我創(chuàng)作它的人。(空間上近指)

• That is when I realised the importance of being a journalist. 就在那時，我意識到了一名記者的重要性。(時間上遠指)

• We welcome those who have come from overseas into our communities and our nation. 我們歡迎那些海外人員加入我們的群體和國家中來。(空間上遠指)

②this指代將要發(fā)生或下文即將提到的事物(有啟下的作用); that指代已經(jīng)完成或上文提到過的事物(有承上的作用)。例如：

• Anytime you find the world waving a chair in your face, remember this: All you need to do is focus. 無論何時，當你發(fā)現(xiàn)世界在你面前揮舞著一把椅子時，記住: 你需要做的就是專注。

• ---I suppose we can have our picnic next week. 我想我們下星期可以去野餐。 ---That'd be lovely. 那真是太好了!

③this/that用于電話用語時，this指自己，that指對方。例如：

• Hi Lucy. This is Pete. 嗨，露西。我是皮特。

• ---Is that Mary speaking? 請問是瑪麗嗎? ---This is she. 我就是。

④that/those可作替代詞，代替上文中提到過的事物。其中，that通常用來代替上文中出現(xiàn)的可數(shù)名詞單數(shù)（此時相當于the one）或不可數(shù)名詞，表示與前面同類的東西，它不和冠詞連用，其后總有修飾語，表示特指。those代替復數(shù)可數(shù)名詞，其后常跟限定性定語，如介詞短語、分詞短語或從句等。例如：

• The red dress is larger than that on the top hanger. 這條紅色連衣裙比衣架最上面的那條大。（指代the dress）

• The computers in this shop are cheaper than those in that shop. 這家商店的電腦比那家的便宜。（指代the computers）

2.其他指示代詞的用法

①such作指示代詞時，既可指代上文中提到的人或事物，表示“那樣的，類似的”，也可指代下文中要提到的人或事物，表示“這樣的，下述一類的”。例如：

• Cricket was boring. Such was her opinion before meeting Ian. 打板球沒意思。這是她在遇見伊恩之前的看法。(指代上文)

• The law mandates that imported goods be identified as such. 法律規(guī)定進口貨物必須像這樣如實標明。(指代下文)

②same作指示代詞時，其前常加定冠詞the，指上文提到的同一人、同一事物或者同一情況。例如：

• The food at a McDonald's restaurant is always the same. 麥當勞餐廳的食物總是一樣的。

• I guess being a physics teacher is much the same. 我想，當個物理老師也差不多。

③so是副詞，但也可以起代詞作用，用于指代上文提到的相同的人、事件或情況。例如：

• I'm a journalist, so is my wife. 我是一名新聞記者，我妻子也是。

• Do you often read a newspaper? If so, which one? 你經(jīng)常看報紙嗎?如果經(jīng)常看，看的是哪一個?

④so用于think、believe、expect、imagine、suppose、hope、afraid等詞之后，代替前文所提出的觀點。例如：

• Now you are telling him how you understand the picture and what makes you think so. 現(xiàn)在你告訴他你是如何理解這幅畫的，以及是什么讓你如此認為的。

• ---You should apologize to her, Barry. 你應該向她道歉，巴里。 ---I suppose so, but it's not going to be easy. 我想是的，但這并不容易。

• ---Well, maybe things are not as bad as they seem to be. 好吧，也許事情并不像看上去那么糟。 ---I hope so. 但愿如此。

三、指示代詞的句法功能

1.指示代詞在句中可作主語。例如：

• This was the breakthrough. 這就是突破。

• These include custom-made navigation tools, night vision systems and intelligent speed adaptations. 這些包括定制導航工具、夜視系統(tǒng)和智能速度調(diào)節(jié)器。

• The same is true of the young adults going to college. 即將上大學的年輕人也是如此。

• Such is their devotion to the common good of the colony. 這就是它們?yōu)槿后w的共同利益所做出的奉獻。

2.指示代詞在句中可作賓語。例如：

• We do this in a fun way, with spelling games and other activities. 我們用一種有趣的方式來做這件事，比如拼字游戲和其他活動。

• It's honorable to help those in need. 能幫助那些有需要的人是一種榮幸。

• I figured I needed to do the same to ensure a good career. 我想我也需要那么做，以確保得到一份好的職業(yè)。

• How can there be things as such? 哪會有這種事?

3.指示代詞在句中可作表語。例如：

• Perhaps the most important result of the experience was this: All of the professors began to think about how they can teach better. 也許這次經(jīng)歷最重要的成果就是: 所有的教授都開始思考他們?nèi)绾胃玫亟虒W。

• The most successful start-ups have been those by celebrities with specific personal style. 最成功的初創(chuàng)企業(yè)是那些具有特定個人風格的名人創(chuàng)辦的企業(yè)。

• It has to continue to move, because the way the world works is not the same. 它必須與時俱進，因為世界運作的方式已經(jīng)不同了。

• The trust between friends is such that if one friend falls in trouble, the other will not think twice to help. 朋友之間的信任是這樣的: 如果其中一人陷入困境, 另外一人會毫不猶豫地伸出援手。
