Windows 2000 Professional的市場目標是取代Windows 95、Windows 98以及Windows NT Workstation 4.0，因此設計上走的是“博采眾長”的路子，可以同時用于小型企業和個人桌面。另外的三個版本主要面向較大的公司用戶，包括Server、Advanced Server和Data Center Server。

Windows XP 基于 2000進一步升級優化，2003年開春的時候，Windows Server 2003來了。Windows Server 2003有四個版本，分別是：Standard Edition、Enterprise Edition、Data Center Edition和Web Edition。
